Moved to the Sunshine State from the UK: Contrary to warnings, found it safer than London and earning triple my previous salary

In a move that has seen many expats flocking to the Middle East, Adam Fedoriow, a 34-year-old gym consultant, left London behind and moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2019. The change of scenery has brought numerous benefits for Adam and his family, including a significantly improved quality of life.

Adam's decision to relocate was driven by various factors. The cost of living in Riyadh, particularly housing, has been a major draw. He now pays around £23,000 per year for a two-bedroom flat, a price that is comparable to what he was paying for a one-bedroom apartment in London. His new home comes with added perks such as an outdoor pool, table tennis, a nursery, and a private cinema.

The climate in Saudi Arabia also offers advantages, especially during the winter months. Adam's daughter, who enjoys swimming and playing outdoors, can continue to enjoy these activities throughout the year, unlike in the UK where winter often limits such opportunities. Additionally, children in Saudi Arabia can play outside in the evening, a contrast to the UK where they are often indoors during cold winter evenings.

However, the move has not been without controversy. Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have criticized the treatment of laborers working on the Neom project in Saudi Arabia. Reports of up to 21,000 worker deaths during construction have surfaced, although Saudi authorities have disputed this figure.

Saudi Arabia has also faced criticism for human rights abuses, including the murder of US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, an incident allegedly approved by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Despite these concerns, the Crown Prince has been the driving force behind a massive campaign to open up Saudi Arabia and attract Westerners.

Despite these issues, Adam claims Saudi Arabia is a safer place to raise his two kids, aged four and two, than London. He also finds the lack of income tax in Saudi Arabia a significant advantage, leaving more money for expenses like raising children.

Adam was approached to help set up a mixed-gender social fitness and wellness lifestyle club in Saudi Arabia, a testament to the growing acceptance of mixed-gender activities in the country. Some expats, including a dozen British influencers, have also been sharing their lifestyles online, showcasing the opportunities and experiences available in Saudi Arabia.

Most expats in Saudi Arabia have healthcare included in their employment package, although the cost for an adult is roughly £1,000 per year, depending on coverage. Adam, who runs his own business in Saudi Arabia, provides medical insurance for the company and its people.

As more expats continue to move to Saudi Arabia, the country is transforming, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity. For Adam, the move has proven to be a positive decision, providing him with a better quality of life and a safer environment for his family.
