MTA Officials Implement Changes to Queens Bus Network Structure in the United States
=========================================================================================
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) have announced the completion of the Queens Bus Network Redesign, a significant project that aims to provide faster, more reliable, and equitable transit services for the city's busiest borough.
The redesign, which is the largest bus redesign in the United States, has been six years in the making, taking into account plans and community feedback from over 300 redesign events and nearly 20,000 comments. The new network consists of 124 routes, an increase of 11 routes from the current network.
One of the key features of the redesign is the addition of a new type of route named a 'Rush' route, offering both local and non-stop services. This initiative is part of the focus on creating a more reliable, faster, and simplified service.
To complement this effort, key bus priority projects have been implemented on Hillside Avenue, Northern Boulevard, 21st Street, and other strategic locations. These projects aim to improve vital commuter connections and deliver more dependable service.
The Queens Bus Network Redesign represents a $33.7 million annual investment to improve operations. The MTA's transformation of the Queens bus network, which includes $34 million for new service, is now complete from Arverne to Astoria.
To monitor the effectiveness of the redesign, the MTA will analyze changes in bus ridership, speeds, reliability, rider satisfaction, and travel times for a six-month period starting in October. The post-implementation report of the Queens bus network redesign will be presented in Spring 2026.
The launch ceremony for the Queens Bus Network Redesign was held in Long Island City, Queens. The redesign aims to provide faster buses, greater reliability, and increased access to jobs, education, and shopping for the city's most bus-reliant borough, home to 800,000 daily riders.
The Queens Bus Network Redesign is a crucial step toward creating a modern, reliable bus system in New York. It is a joint effort between the MTA and NYC DOT, working together to improve the daily lives of Queens residents and commuters. The redesign is a testament to the commitment of these organisations to delivering a better, more efficient transit system for all New Yorkers.
