Multitudes of vultures at the waste disposal site - Multitudes of Storks Spotted at Dumping Ground
In the picturesque town of Büttelborn, located in the southern Hessian district of Groß-Gerau, a unique spectacle is unfolding. Hundreds of white storks have returned to the local waste disposal site, transforming the landscape into a temporary haven for these majestic birds.
According to Bernd Petri, an ornithologist from the Hessian state association of NABU, approximately 600 white storks are currently residing at the site. These birds are migrating from the north and are taking a brief rest on their journey to Spain.
The migration pattern of these birds is quite fascinating. While some white storks stay at the landfill for only a few days, others remain for several weeks. The adult white storks are currently on the move, while the young ones began their journey in early August.
Interestingly, at least 400 white storks overwinter at the landfill, where they find sustenance in the form of leftovers, mice, and insects. This makes the landfill an essential pit stop for these migratory birds.
It was Frank Burkard, a local resident, who reported the number of white storks in the waste tower of Büttelborn back in 2021. His observation has since attracted the attention of bird lovers and nature enthusiasts from far and wide.
The sight of these graceful birds against the backdrop of the landfill is truly a spectacle to behold. As the sun sets, the white storks can be seen silhouetted against the sky, a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature.
As the migration continues, the white storks will soon embark on the next leg of their journey, leaving behind memories of their brief sojourn at the Büttelborn landfill. Until then, the town continues to serve as a vital resting point for these majestic birds, offering a unique opportunity for locals and visitors alike to witness the magic of migration.
