Multitudes say goodbye to Armani

Giorgio Armani, Italy's most celebrated fashion designer, passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday. The news sent shockwaves through the fashion industry and beyond, as the world mourned the loss of a visionary who had redefined Italian fashion.

Armani's coffin was placed in a room darkened by hundreds of paper lanterns at the Teatro Armani, a venue he had personally chosen for his major fashion shows almost exclusively until this summer. A bouquet of white roses lay on the coffin, a simple yet poignant tribute to the man who had made a lasting impact on the world of fashion.

More than 6,000 people paid their respects at the headquarters of the Armani Group in Milan, with the line of mourners stretching far out onto the street. Designer Donatella Versace was among those who came to pay their respects, a testament to the deep connections Armani had forged within the industry.

Armani's health had been declining for several months before his death, but he had remained determined to continue his work. He had announced a comeback for this month, but unfortunately, it never materialized. An exhibition dedicated to Armani's life's work is set to open in Milan this month, offering a chance for fans to celebrate his legacy.

Armani founded Giorgio Armani SpA with his partner Sergio Galeotti in the mid-70s. After Galeotti's early death in 1985, Armani owned the company alone, leading it to become one of the most successful fashion brands in the world. Today, the company is worth many billions.

Giorgio Armani's successor will be a gradual transition to a group of close associates and family members. His longtime confidant Leo Dell'Orco, who managed the men's collections, will play a key role, along with his two nieces Roberta and Silvana Armani, and his nephew Andrea Camerana, all of whom are active in the company and part of the board. This joint leadership ensures that the brand continues under the guidance of those who knew Armani best.

A large screen next to a large photo of Armani displays the words "The legacy I wish to leave is one of commitment, respect, and attention to people and reality." These words encapsulate the essence of Armani's approach to fashion and his impact on the world.

The coffin of Giorgio Armani will remain at the Teatro Armani until Sunday evening, offering those who wish to pay their respects one final opportunity to do so. As the world continues to come to terms with his passing, there is no doubt that Armani's legacy will live on, inspiring generations of fashion enthusiasts to come.
