Multitudes say goodbye to the fashion icon, Armani
Fashion Legend Giorgio Armani Bid Farewell in Milan
Giorgio Armani, the iconic Italian fashion designer, passed away on Thursday at the age of 91. His passing has left an indelible mark on the fashion world, and his legacy was celebrated in a small, intimate ceremony on Monday.
Armani's final resting place was at the Armani headquarters in Milan, where a large screen next to a large photo of the designer displayed the words: "The legacy I wish to leave is one of commitment, respect, and attention to people and reality." A coffin, adorned with a bouquet of white roses, was present in a room darkened by hundreds of paper lanterns.
The line of mourners stretched far out onto the street, with designer Donatella Versace among those paying their respects. More than 6,000 people paid their respects at the Armani headquarters, where Armani regularly presented his new collections. The coffin will remain at the Teatro Armani until Sunday evening, where Armani had personally presented his major fashion shows almost exclusively.
Armani's health had been declining for several months before his death. In June and July, he had to cancel his appearances. Italian media reports suggest that Armani had plans for his succession. The successor to Giorgio Armani is not a single person but a group including his long-time associate Leo Dell'Orco, his nieces Roberta and Silvana Armani, his sister Rosanna, and her son Andrea Camerana.
Armani founded his company 50 years ago, Giorgio Armani SpA, with his partner Sergio Galeotti in the mid-70s. The company is now worth billions. After Galeotti's early death in 1985, Armani owned the company alone.
An exhibition dedicated to Armani's life's work is scheduled to begin in Milan this month. The funeral was a private event, with only a select few in attendance. Armani lived in one of the most elegant streets of Milan, the northern Italian metropolis, and spent the summer in one of his villas in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera.
Armani's will is to be opened within 14 days after the burial. The fashion world will continue to feel the impact of his legacy for years to come, as his commitment, respect, and attention to people and reality live on in his designs.
