Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad Warned of Traffic Disruptions During Ganesh Visarjan in 2025
Heavy Traffic Disruptions Expected Across Indian Cities During Ganesh Visarjan 2025
Anant Chaturdashi, a major Hindu festival, is being celebrated on September 6, 2025, in several Indian cities including Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. Thousands of Ganesh idols, including the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai, will be immersed during the festivities.
Mumbai and Suburbs
The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert warning of heavy rainfall, which may slow down processions and further impact traffic flow. A total of 84 major roads are fully closed to traffic for visarjan processions. Key stretches in South, Central, and Eastern Mumbai, including parts of Parel, Byculla, Tardeo, and Chembur, will not allow vehicle movement.
To ensure smooth processions and public safety, important traffic regulations include road closures, diversions, and restrictions on heavy vehicles near immersion sites. The city has deployed an extensive security force of over 18,000 police personnel and 3,000 supervisory officers. All heavy vehicles are banned from entering the city limits from midnight of September 6 until midnight of September 7. Procession-heavy areas such as Sinhgad Road, Dhayari Phata, and Mundhwa will also see significant closures throughout the day.
An AI-powered monitoring system has been set up to track congestion and provide real-time traffic management, especially at Girgaon Chowpatty. Commuters are strongly advised to use public transport instead of private vehicles, allow extra travel time, follow police guidance on diversions, carry rain protection such as umbrellas or raincoats, wear non-slip footwear due to wet conditions, avoid unnecessary travel through procession routes, and be aware of the potential for emergencies given the size of the crowds expected.
Pune
In Pune, 17 major roads including Laxmi Road, Tilak Road, Bajirao Road, and Shivaji Road are closed for vehicular traffic. Commuters are advised to use public transport and avoid private vehicles. Pune Metro is operating non-stop for 41 hours, from Saturday morning until late Sunday night, with trains running every three minutes.
Ahmedabad
In Ahmedabad, several key routes will be closed from 1 PM until late night for immersion processions. Do not use any private vehicles in these areas during the specified times.
Hyderabad
In Hyderabad, traffic from Gandimaisamma and Pragathi Nagar to JNTU will be rerouted via Nizampet Village Road during Ganesh Visarjan. Rakhial Crossroads to Gurudwara, via Saraspur is closed for traffic. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid Tank Bund and Necklace Road, as they will be dedicated entirely to the visarjan processions.
Vehicles traveling from Kukatpally Y Junction to Madhapur via IDL Tank Road will be diverted at the IDL entrance towards JNTU, Forum Mall, Hitech City, and then Madhapur during Ganesh Visarjan. Kalupur Station to Town Hall, passing through Sarangpur, Astodia, and Ellis Bridge is closed for traffic.
Delhi and Gujarat
In Delhi Darwaja to Dadhichi Bridge, divert via Dariyapur Circle → Idgah Circle → Girdharnagar Circle → Maharaj Pragnya Swami Underpass during Ganesh Visarjan. From Geetamandir to Paldi, follow the route via Behrampura, Danilimda, Ambedkar Bridge, then to Paldi/Ashram Road. Geetamandir ST Stand to Paldi, via Jamalpur and Sardar Bridge, and Geetamandir ST Stand to Kalupur Railway Station, via Raipur crossroads and Sarangpur, are among the roads closed.
From Delhi Darwaja to Dadhichi Bridge, via Namaste Circle/Limda Junction is closed for traffic during Ganesh Visarjan. In Gujarat, from 1 PM until late night, several busy junctions are being redirected, such as routes between Padmashree Govardhan Bafna Chowk and Vinoli Junction, and from Navjeevan Junction to Gajanan Vartak Chowk.
Emergency Response and Crowd Control
Authorities have put in place crowd-control and emergency-response units to ensure a smooth visarjan. Hospitals along Laxmi Road and in the Peth areas have flagged concerns over high noise levels during dhol-tasha performances, so people are advised to use alternative medical facilities where possible.
Women-led patrols and additional traffic wardens have been stationed in procession-heavy areas. A large security presence has been deployed across the cities with CCTV surveillance in key locations. Temporary ring routes around central Pune have been opened to reduce congestion in core procession areas.
Commuter Advice
Commuters are strongly advised to follow police guidance on diversions, avoid bringing private vehicles into procession areas, and rely on public transport. It is also recommended to allow extra travel time, wear non-slip footwear due to wet conditions, and be aware of the potential for emergencies given the size of the crowds expected.
