Mumbru's Victory as "Warrior" Leaves Doubts Hanging
The German basketball team is gearing up for their quarterfinal match against Slovenia in the European Championship, following a hard-fought victory against Portugal. After a three-day break, the team has enjoyed the pleasant weather in Riga, Latvia, taking a well-deserved rest after their successful entry into the quarterfinals.
However, the team's journey hasn't been without its hurdles. Head coach Alex Mumbru, who missed the entire preliminary round in Tampere due to illness, was hospitalised last Monday with an "acute abdomen." Mumbru's return to the team was met with happiness by the players, and he has since shared coaching duties with his assistant, Alan Ibrahimagic.
Mumbru's press conference, which was initially scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed to Monday by the federation. The team's focus is now on training and working on their weaknesses to improve for the quarter-finals. Mumbru's presence, though somewhat ready, has seen him sit on the bench unusually often and for extended periods during the game against Portugal.
The German Basketball National Team has also requested a change in accommodation due to the hotel not meeting tournament requirements. The team will have a day of rest on Sunday before returning to hard work from Monday.
Slovenia, the team's next opponent, secured their round of 16 win against Italy with an 84:77 victory. Star player Luka Doncic scored an impressive 42 points for Slovenia, including 30 in the first two quarters. The increased pressure in the crucial phase of the tournament is not lost on the German team, who are determined to give their best performance.
Captain Schroder dedicated the round of 16 victory to Mumbru, expressing his sympathy for the head coach's situation. Moritz Wagner, as a TV expert, echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the challenges Mumbru has faced.
The path to the first European Championship title in 32 years seems clear for the reigning champions after Serbia's elimination. The German team is ready to face Slovenia, hoping to continue their winning streak and bring home the title.
