Murdoch purchases control of three child's shares to ensure the future of his media conglomerate.
In a significant development, Rupert Murdoch's media empire is undergoing a transformation, following a settlement that resolves a long-standing family dispute. The settlement, worth over $1.5 billion, will see Rupert Murdoch's son, Lachlan, taking control of both Fox Corp. and News Corp. after the media magnate's death.
The settlement had been a long time in coming, as tensions between Rupert and his children, particularly James, have been simmering for a generation. James, an outspoken critic of the direction of Fox News and other Murdoch news outlets, has been a significant rival for corporate control within the family.
Each of Lachlan's three eldest siblings will receive $1.1 billion as part of the settlement. This deal, which ended a long family dispute, also transfers control of the media empire to Lachlan. The Murdoch companies are selling shares worth more than $1.4 billion to help fund the payments.
The original family trust, which gave equal financial stakes and votes to the four children from Rupert Murdoch's first and second marriages, will be dissolved. A new trust will be created, with Lachlan in full control. The percentage of voting shares held by the new family trust has been diluted, from roughly 40% to around one-third in both Fox Corp. and News Corp.
Rupert Murdoch, who is 94 years old, has been a formidable figure in the media landscape for decades. His media empire includes Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post. Despite the settlement, tensions remain between him and James. Rupert Murdoch's attempt to have the irrevocable family trust revoked was ruled as bad faith by a Nevada state probate official.
Meanwhile, Fox News, a key part of the Murdoch media empire, has been embroiled in a defamation suit from election software company Smartmatic, over conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 election. Under the guidance of Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch, who is considered more ideological than his father in terms of conservative outlook, has been steering the ship.
Rupert Murdoch has ensured his media empire will retain a conservative identity after his death. However, the future direction of the empire remains to be seen, as Lachlan takes on the mantle from his father. The settlement marks a new chapter in the history of the Murdoch family and their media empire.
