Museums in Berlin are increasing their ticket costs.
As of August 13, 2025, the cultural landscape of Berlin continues to evolve, with a new addition to its list of must-visit spots – The Knast. Located in the historic Lichterfelde, a southwestern locality of the city, The Knight has transformed an old Berlin prison into a vibrant culinary and cultural meeting point.
In a separate development, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) has announced changes to the admission fees for several Berlin museums. From October 24, the Old National Gallery on Museum Island will charge a new entrance fee of 14 euros, with special exhibitions costing 16 euros. The SPK has also expanded the admission fee to houses that were previously free of charge.
The increase in museum entry fees has led many visitors to question the affordability of culture in Berlin. However, the SPK justifies these changes, citing increasing costs for operation, energy, and personnel. The additional income is intended to secure the quality of the exhibitions and improve service for guests.
The "Cultural Forum" ticket, which grants access to six significant institutions – the Painting Gallery, the Art Library, the Applied Arts Museum, the Print Room, the New National Gallery, and the Musical Instrument Museum – now costs 22 euros, up from the previous 20 euros. From October 3, visitors to the Ethnological Museum or the Museum of Asian Art in the Humboldt Forum will also have to pay an admission fee.
Among the institutions under the SPK's management, The Knast stands as a unique example of cultural innovation. Nestled in a historic building, The Knast serves a diverse array of cuisine while hosting painting, photography, and performance exhibitions. The atmosphere is inviting, making it an excellent destination for both food lovers and art enthusiasts.
The Friedrichswerdersche Church, another cultural institution under the SPK's management, will also introduce an admission fee from the turn of the year. Regular tickets will cost 6 euros, while reduced tickets will be available for 3 euros.
Despite the changes, Berlin's cultural scene remains vibrant and diverse, offering a wealth of experiences for visitors and locals alike. The Knast serves as a testament to this resilience, providing a unique blend of culinary delights and cultural immersion in a historic setting.
