Music Award Named after Composer Louis Spohr

In the heart of Germany lies the city of Brunswick, which maintains a strong bond with the renowned musician Louis Spohr. This connection is reflected in the revival of the Louis-Spohr-Musikpreis, a prize awarded to outstanding contemporary composers.

Louis Spohr, a composer who was active in various locations throughout his career, spent a significant time in Kassel. His dedication to composers of his time was honoured with the establishment of the Ludwig Spohr Prize of the City of Brunswick in 1953. From 1953 to 1994, the prize was awarded 18 times.

However, the prize ceased in 1994. The revival of this prestigious award in 2002 was due to the commitment of the voluntary, civic "Initiative Louis Spohr". The Initiative played a crucial role in the revival of the Louis Spohr Music Prize of Brunswick, which was first awarded again in 2019.

The Louis-Spohr-Musikpreis is a tribute to Louis Spohr, a great son of the city. The prize maintains a strong bond with the city of Brunswick and Louis Spohr, and it continues the tradition of the Ludwig Spohr Prize of the City of Brunswick. The revival of the prize was a significant moment for the city and the music community, as it recognises and supports the work of contemporary composers.
