Music community hit by tragedy as renowned conductor Christoph von Dohnányi passes away

Christoph von Dohnányi, a celebrated conductor who played a pivotal role in shaping Hamburg into a renowned music city, passed away on Saturday at the age of 95 in Munich.

Born on September 8, 1929, in Berlin, Dohnányi's career spanned over six decades, during which he conducted at all major opera houses around the world and stood at the podium of the great orchestras in Europe and the USA.

Hamburg's Senator for Culture, Carsten Brosda (SPD), praised Dohnányi as the architect of the music city of Hamburg. His tireless commitment to culture has certainly left an indelible mark on the city, enhancing the orchestra's reputation worldwide. Some of his notable achievements include acclaimed concerts in New York in 2007 at the Carnegie Hall and before the United Nations on the 50th anniversary of the Rome Treaties.

Dohnányi's influence extended beyond Hamburg, as he held several important conducting positions. At the age of 27, he became the youngest General Music Director (GMD) in Lübeck. He later served as GMD at Staatstheater Kassel (1963–1966), GMD and director of Oper Frankfurt and Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester (from 1968 and from 1972 respectively), Intendant and GMD of Hamburg State Opera and chief conductor of Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg (1977–1984), Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra (1984–2002), Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of Philharmonia Orchestra London (1997–2008), and chief conductor and artistic advisor of Orchestre de Paris (1998–2000). He later led the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg (2004–2011).

From 1977 to 1984, Dohnányi led the Hamburg State Opera, setting accents with young directors such as Luc Bondy, Jürgen Flimm, Achim Freyer, and Herbert Wernicke. Hendrik Lünenborg, the Intendant of Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), paid tribute to Dohnányi as "one of the most significant personalities of the international music scene".

Dohnányi's contributions to the arts were not limited to music. He powerfully advocated the value of the arts and made them tangibly experienceable worldwide. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra owes much to its former chief conductor, Christoph von Dohnányi. He was a visionary and pioneer of the Elbphilharmonie.

Dohnányi's personal life was as remarkable as his professional one. His mother was a sister of the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His father, Hans von Dohnányi, was a resistance fighter who was executed in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Dohnányi was married in his third marriage and has five children, including the actor Justus von Dohnányi. His older brother, Klaus von Dohnányi, is a former Federal Minister of Education and Science and former Mayor of Hamburg.

Dohnányi's legacy will undoubtedly live on in the music city of Hamburg and beyond. His global standards in opera and concert will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.
