In the vibrant neighbourhood of Loisaida, the East Village played host to the 15th annual New Village Music Festival. Founded by local resident and renowned figure David Soto, also known as DāSo, the festival has become a cherished tradition for the community.

DāSo, a singer, songwriter, community organiser, youth advocate, and the creator of the Piragua Art Space and the Piragua Clothing Brand, established the festival in 2007 with a vision to unite the community through live music, dance, and performing arts.

This year's event, held in Tompkins Square Park, was no exception. The festival featured a diverse range of music genres, including World Hip Hop, Hip Hop Soul, Poetry, Latin Boogaloo, Traditional Puerto Rican Folk, Salsa, and DJ sets.

Despite missing a few parts due to scheduling issues with his musicians, DāSo expressed his joy at being part of the festival. He described it as a "spiritual community awakening," a testament to the festival's power to bring people together.

Many attendees felt the same, with one emcee, Giraldo Luis Alvaré, expressing his admiration for the festival's ability to foster a sense of unity and love within the community.

DāSo, who won the prestigious Acker Award, chose to "relax and enjoy the music" at the festival, taking a moment to appreciate the blessings that came in the form of the music and arts expression shared by the artists.

The New Village Music Festival is more than just a music event; it's a treat for the neighbourhood and a learning experience for everyone involved. The festival relies on a multitude of volunteers, and more information about it can be found on dasoentertainment.com and NVmusicfest.com.

The festival's 2023 edition was generously sponsored by CHARAS, Inc., Lower East Side Music Workshop, Loisaida Inc., Henry Street Settlement, Kazuza Lounge, Titi's Empanadas, RoJo Entertainment, and Siempre Palante.

As the sun sets on another successful New Village Music Festival, the community eagerly awaits next year's edition, knowing that it will once again be a celebration of music, arts, and community spirit.
