The attack was initially attributed to the Dark Storm Team, a group that claimed responsibility for the attack on Telegram. However, their claim has since been retracted. The exact identity of the individuals or groups behind the attack remains unclear.
Elon Musk, who serves as the CEO of X, was quick to acknowledge the attack, stating that it was a Mirai variant botnet attack involving compromised cameras. He also emphasised that the attack was carried out with a substantial amount of resources.
Musk also claimed that the IP addresses involved in the attack were linked to Ukraine. However, cybersecurity experts, including Kevin Beaumont and those from Check Point Software Technologies, have disputed this claim. Beaumont suggests that the attack might have been carried out by advanced persistent teenagers (APTs), and the IP addresses involved were from worldwide locations, not just Ukraine.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the origins of the attack, Musk was adamant that X gets attacked every day. He highlighted that this particular attack was notable due to its scale, with more than 40,000 reports of an outage received on Monday morning by DownDetector.
