"My history has instilled a sense of accountability within me, a duty that is perpetual and unending"
On August 28, 2025, the city of Gütersloh paid tribute to Sabine Gramlich, a long-time resident and a beacon of activism, by inaugurating the Women's Place NRW. This project, initiated by the Women's Council NRW, aims to bring the lives of historically significant women to the forefront.
Sabine Gramlich, who has lived in Gütersloh since 1955, was an active participant in rallies, vigils, demonstrations, the 'Political Night Prayer', and street blockades. Her commitment to peace and justice, and her belief in giving women a strong voice in societal debates, has left a lasting impact on the city.
City Archivist Julia Kuklik highlighted milestones in Gramlich's life, noting her involvement in various organisations and movements, particularly the peace movement. Two of Gramlich's sons, Peter and Rainer, remembered their mother during the inauguration, expressing their gratitude to the many people who supported her during her activities.
The Women's Place NRW in Gütersloh is dedicated to Sabine Gramlich. Inge Trame, a city official, stated that the memorial plaque for Gramlich keeps her not only in the cityscape but also in our memory. The project is funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The inauguration included music, personal memories, and historical retrospectives. Dagmar C. Weinert provided musical moments, including interpretations of peace-themed songs. Peter Boels, who accompanied the event, added a touch of music to the memorable occasion.
Sabine Gramlich, even at over seventy years old, was not a passive observer in her activities. She initiated the 'Political Night Prayer' and was a member of the Refugee Council, church women's groups, the psychiatry department of the LWL Clinic, Amnesty International, and the peace movement, among others.
Her words, "History challenged me to take responsibility, and this responsibility is never-ending," echoed through the event, serving as a commitment and encouragement for others to stand up for what they believe in. Rainer Gramlich, in his speech, thanked the people who supported his mother during her activities, emphasising the importance of community support in activism.
The Women's Place NRW in Gütersloh stands as a testament to Sabine Gramlich's life and work, a place where her legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to take up the mantle of activism and make a difference in their communities.
