Nantucket Haven Unveiled Through Collaboration Between Workshop and APD
Nantucket Seaside Estate Transformed by Workshop/APD and West Chin Architects
Nantucket, the picturesque island off the coast of Massachusetts, is home to a stunning new seaside estate. The property, once a dilapidated international-style house, has been transformed into a contemporary masterpiece by architecture and design firm Workshop/APD, selected for the ELLE Decor A-List 2023, and West Chin Architects.
The home, situated near the Brant Point Lighthouse, boasts a design that seamlessly blends the historic spirit of the island with modern life. Clad in cedar shingles with gray windows, the home embodies the essence of Nantucket while offering a fresh, contemporary aesthetic.
As one approaches the property, they are greeted by a grand scale layout, with a focus on indoor/outdoor living and maximizing water views. The home's entrance moves smoothly into a double-height living room, confronting the harbor immediately. The living quarters are arranged to pinwheel off the grand living space, creating a casually sophisticated interior for the family.
The home's design emphasizes natural woods, light upholstery, and a good mix of texture, creating a natural sophistication that lives in harmony with the outdoors. The home features sliding doors allowing for straight-through views of the harbor, and a screened porch on one side and the kitchen on the other.
Two sets of stairs bookend the main living room, with one leading to the primary suite and the other to secondary bedrooms. The home's office space is designed to provide a sense of peacefulness, reflecting the homeowners' desire for a tranquil environment.
The property, despite its prominent location, lacks privacy. It is situated open to a popular pedestrian path and can be seen from the water, resembling the green light Jay Gatsby gazed upon. To address this, the team worked with landscape designer Miroslava Ahern to develop a series of landscaped plinths for a smooth approach to the new, elevated house. As per FEMA regulations, any habitable spaces had to be built five feet upward.
Colors found within the interior were intentionally injected in small amounts, matching the gardens designed by Miroslava Ahern. The home has two seating groups in the central living room, one casual and focused toward the harbor, and the other more refined for materiality.
Workshop/APD has been a go-to firm for contemporary homes on Nantucket for more than 25 years. Their work on this seaside estate is a testament to their commitment to creating homes that are beautifully designed, functional, and in harmony with their surroundings. The Nantucket seaside estate is a shining example of their expertise and dedication.
