Narrow-gauge railway in Harz requires track renovation
The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB), a popular tourist attraction in the Harz County, is in need of significant investments in its track network and trains. The Brocken line of the HSB, a significant part of the longest continuous narrow-gauge network in Germany, has been identified as requiring renovation.
County Commissioner Thomas Balcerowski (CDU) in Halberstadt has stated that the Brocken line needs renovation. He further added that far-reaching decisions need to be made regarding the HSB, but did not disclose specifics or investment amounts.
Discussions about the financing of the HSB renovation are currently taking place in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, with the renovation depending on the financing from these federal states. A supervisory board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, and another staff meeting at the HSB is planned for next Tuesday.
The track width of the HSB is one meter, and the network spans around 140 kilometers. The steam locomotives of the HSB are a famous tourist attraction in the Harz, drawing visitors from far and wide.
The renovation of the Brocken line of the HSB is expected to take several years. The available search results did not provide explicit information about the operators or financing sources responsible for the renovation. However, it is clear that the future of the HSB is a topic of great importance in the region.
As the HSB continues to be a significant contributor to the tourism industry in the Harz County, it is hoped that the necessary investments will be made to ensure the continued operation and enjoyment of this unique railway system.
