NASA displays eerie likeness of Solar Pumpkin on Halloween
The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), operated by NASA, has once again provided a captivating glimpse into our local star. In October 2014, the SDO captured an image of the Sun that has since garnered over 9 lakh likes on Instagram.
The image, shared by NASA Sun on their account, shows the Sun appearing to "grin." It combines two collections of severe ultraviolet wavelengths at 171 and 193 Angstroms, typically colourized in gold and yellow.
The image reveals dark patches on the Sun, known as coronal holes. These areas are where rapid solar wind gushes out into space. The energetic areas in the image are brighter because they send out more light and power. They are markers of an intense and intricate set of electromagnetic fields floating in the Sun's environment, the corona.
The SDO is responsible for recording phenomena like solar flares and coronal loopholes, helping us understand our Sun better. The image was taken by the SDO and was shared by NASA on November 1, 2022, with the subtitle, "Say cheese! Today, NASA's Solar Characteristics Observatory caught the Sun 'grinning'."
Users on NASA's Sun post were equally impressed. One commented, "That's so stunning, therefore cool at the same time." Another user added, "The universe is gorgeous." A third user even commented, "prohibited jack o lantern," perhaps referring to the Halloween-like appearance of the image.
NASA later shared another image on Instagram, this time labelling it as a solar jack-o-lantern. The photo, shared on November 1, 2022, shows a sunspot mask with dark spots, also captured by the SDO.
The SDO has been maintaining an unblinking eye on the Sun since 2010, providing us with stunning images like these that help us better understand our Sun and the universe.
