Stadium Collapse at Club Regatas Corrientes: A Symbolic Institution in Corrientes Temporarily Closed
The iconic Estadio José Jorge Contte of Club Regatas Corrientes in Corrientes, Argentina, suffered a collapse on August 13, 2025, during renovation works. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM, fortunately during the afternoon siesta, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The stadium, a significant landmark in the city and the province, is used for basketball games, volleyball, and community events. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation by specialized engineers, as announced by the club's president, Eduardo Tassano.
The governor of Corrientes, Gustavo Valdés, has pledged significant investment to ensure the new structure will be fully compliant with safety standards. The governor also announced his intention to rebuild the stadium roof. The province will also support Club Regatas Corrientes in the rebuilding process.
The Regatas Corrientes basketball team, preparing for the upcoming season, will temporarily relocate its preseason training to the Alvear stadium due to the closure of the José Jorge Contte stadium. The Liga Nacional de Básquet has expressed solidarity with the club, and local rival San Martín de Corrientes has offered support and collaboration during this challenging period.
The Uruguayan rock band El Cuarteto de Nos' concert, scheduled for August 14, will be relocated due to the stadium collapse. The location for the concert will be confirmed in the next few hours.
Firefighters, Civil Defense personnel, and Corrientes Police arrived at the scene following the incident. All activities at the stadium are suspended, and the club will remain closed for the day to allow for a thorough evaluation of the damage.
The stadium, built in 1971, has been a symbolic institution for the city and the province. The collapse has caused the total destruction of the structure, with pieces of wood and blue and white sheet metal scattered throughout. The start of the National Basketball League will depend on the evaluation of specialists regarding the completion of the stadium renovations.
Club Regatas Corrientes issued a statement, stating that there were material damages and they are working with the relevant authorities to evaluate the next steps. The club assured that there were no victims because there were no scheduled activities at the time of the collapse.
Club San Martín of Corrientes expressed solidarity with Club Regatas Corrientes and offered collaboration during this challenging period. The community of Corrientes stands together in support of their beloved institution, Regatas Corrientes, as they work towards rebuilding and returning to the court.
