At the College of the Holy Cross, efforts are being made to combat sexual violence and support survivors, particularly male survivors who face significant stigma and lack of resources. One organisation leading this charge is Child Protected Against Trafficking (CPAT), which focuses on combating sex trafficking.

Last week, a sexual violence forum was held, involving representatives from the College Counseling Center, Chaplain's Office, and Relationship Peer Educators. The aim was to promote awareness for sexual violence within the student body.

In a recent development, Health Services at the College announced an "Express STI Clinic" for confidential STI and pregnancy testing. The appointments at the clinic are private, providing a safe space for those seeking testing.

The issue of sexual violence is still often misunderstood and contributes to the problem of rape culture. Bystanders have a role in preventing sexual violence by intervening when they see someone misbehaving towards an intoxicated person. Victim-blaming attitudes are harmful, as they imply that sexual violence can be prevented if a victim was not drinking or using substances.

Understanding the complexities of sexual violence can help others build upon their own knowledge to combat the issue. RAINN, an organisation that works to prevent sexual violence, defines drug-facilitated sexual assault as coercion to drink beyond someone's limits, non-compliance in dangerous situations, initiating contact with an intoxicated individual, and lying about the amount of substance in a beverage.

On February 1, 2024, a drugging incident was reported at Whiskey on Water, a bar frequently attended by Holy Cross upperclassmen. The administration sent an email to the campus community about ways to prevent future druggings and the risks of sexual violence.

Building a community and trust among friends can help make college campuses safer, especially in preventing sexual violence. Discussing sensitive issues like sexual violence should be done in trauma-sensitive ways to avoid triggering survivors.
