In the picturesque town of Detmold, two groundbreaking youth welfare projects are gaining attention from high-level officials. State Secretary Lorenz Bahr (Greens) recently visited the town to learn about the lighthouse projects for families and child protection, and Minister of Family Affairs Josefine Paul is planning to visit this summer.

The first project, known as K.I.D.S., is a satellite office of the youth welfare office. Equipped with two beds, K.I.D.S. provides emergency care for children without barriers, acting as a deceleration in the process of taking children into care. This child protection house, which has a state-wide model status, offers child-friendly accommodation for up to ten days.

Children at K.I.D.S. are comprehensively and calmly involved in decision-making processes regarding their care. This approach has been commended by State Secretary Bahr, who also praised the youth welfare experts and the mayor for their approach. K.I.D.S. is particularly important in cases of child endangerment, as the child protection team resorts to this measure around 100 times a year.

The second project, Familien.Info.Treff (F.I.T.), serves as a central point of contact for families in need and a meeting point for parents to exchange ideas. F.I.T. offers all family services under one roof, including advice from a family midwife and questions about childcare places. The focus of the visit was on these two projects, with Jennifer Sonneborn, head of the Youth, School, and Sports department, mentioning that they use funding to go new ways and make these projects permanent if successful.

The Mayor of Detmold, Frank Hilker, plans to expand F.I.T. directly next to the Bildungs.Info.Treff (B.I.T.), another project that provides answers to questions about school, career orientation, and participation in city affairs for young people.

State Secretary Bahr wants to promote a dialogue between levels of youth welfare about innovative solutions like the Detmold model. He believes that such projects can provide a blueprint for other towns and cities to follow, ultimately benefiting children and families across North Rhine-Westphalia.

Unfortunately, not all initiatives have been successful. The "Elternchancen" project, a successful parent accompaniment offer, had to be discontinued due to lack of funds from the state or federal government. Despite this setback, the spirit of innovation and collaboration remains strong in Detmold, as it continues to pave the way for progressive youth welfare solutions.
