In an unexpected turn of events, a 36-year-old captain and his 33-year-old mate found themselves under investigation for drunk navigation on August 30, 2025. The incident occurred on the Mittelland Canal near Wunstorf-Kolenfeld, close to Hannover, Germany.

According to reports, the captain was found to have a blood alcohol level of 2.0 promille, while his mate had a slightly higher level of 2.2 promille. Both readings exceeded the legal limit of 2 promille, raising concerns about their ability to safely operate the freighter.

Witnesses reported unusual maneuvering by the captain, leading to the temporary prohibition of further travel. The captain required multiple attempts to complete the docking near Bückeburg, further fuelling suspicions of intoxication.

Upon receiving the reports, the police responded promptly, instructing the captain to dock the freighter. A criminal investigation for drunk boating was initiated, and the pair are currently under investigation.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of operating heavy machinery, such as a freighter, while under the influence of alcohol. The authorities are working diligently to ensure a thorough investigation and to ensure the safety of all those using the Mittelland Canal.

As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge. The public will be kept informed as the case progresses.
