The Dallas Mavericks have announced that forward P.J. Washington has agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract extension, keeping him with the team through the 2029-30 season. This news comes just days before the start of the 2025-26 season, which the Mavericks will begin without point guard Kyrie Irving.

Washington, who was selected 12th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2019 NBA draft, spent his first five and a half years with the team before being traded to Dallas in the 2023-24 season. The trade, which saw Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a top-two protected 2027 first-round pick head to Charlotte, has proven to be a significant move for the Mavericks.

In his debut season with Dallas, Washington started 84 out of 86 games he played, recording impressive statistics of 13.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. These numbers earned him a spot among eight players in the 2024-25 season to average one block and one steal per game, with a minimum of 50 games played, according to ESPN Research.

With the departure of Irving, the Mavericks are looking to fill the void at point guard. D'Angelo Russell and Dante Exum have been signed to provide temporary coverage until Irving's return. If reports are to be believed, Cooper Flagg could start at shooting guard, with Washington potentially moving to small forward. This lineup would see Anthony Davis at power forward and Derrick Lively at center.

Four out of the five projected starters for the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025-26 season are six-foot-seven or taller, providing a formidable presence on the court. The Mavericks are optimistic about their chances, despite the early-season absence of Irving.

The announcement about Washington's contract extension was made on September 3, 2025, by Shams Charania. With Washington secured under contract, the Mavericks are looking forward to a promising future in the NBA.
