Nestlé: Romantic Involvement Leads to Termination of Senior Executive
Nestlé Faces Another Leadership Crisis as CEO Laurent Freixe Steps Down
Nestlé, the world's largest food company, is once again embroiled in a leadership crisis. The company's CEO, Laurent Freixe, has stepped down after a year, following an undisclosed relationship with a subordinate employee.
The case was triggered through Nestlé's internal whistleblower system, "Speak Up." Initial investigations yielded no results, but a second probe under external oversight brought clarity. As a result, Freixe was dismissed, and Philipp Navratil was appointed as his successor in August 2025.
The news sent Nestlé's listed shares tumbling, with a fall of around 1.2 percent. The stock last traded at 74.57 francs, and the chart remains weak for Nestlé. Until confidence returns, investors are advised to steer clear of the Nestlé stock.
This is not the first time a major company has faced such a crisis. Similar cases have occurred in the past, such as at McDonald's in 2019 and US retailer Kohl's in 2025, where CEOs were also ousted over relationships within the company.
Prior to Freixe's departure, Nestlé has been criticised for lacking genuine innovation for years. The sudden change in leadership exacerbates the leadership crisis at the company.
Nestlé's board chairman, Paul Bulcke, stated that Freixe's departure was a necessary decision to uphold the company's values and leadership. Freixe will not receive a severance package.
Mark Schneider, who was previously CEO, had to step down after nearly eight years. Navratil, who was previously head of the Nespresso brand, is now tasked with steering the company through this challenging period.
The turmoil at the top increases pressure on Nestlé, and it remains to be seen how Navratil will navigate the company through this crisis and restore investor confidence.
