New Service Launch by National Express West Midlands on Route 17A
The 17A bus service, an extension of the existing 17 service, is set to commence on August 3rd, 2025. This new service, a joint initiative between National Express West Midlands and Birmingham Airport, aims to contribute to the region's sustainability goals and reduce traffic and harmful emissions on the roads.
The extended 17 service is a significant step towards increasing the sustainable modal split targets as outlined in Birmingham Airport's Airport Surface Access Strategy. This service offers a convenient and cost-effective alternative to driving, allowing passengers to save on fuel and parking costs.
The new 17A bus line will run between Birmingham city centre and Birmingham Airport, with stops at Small Heath, Yardley, and Tile Cross. The service will operate journeys every 30 minutes, ensuring a frequent and reliable service for passengers.
National Express West Midlands is expanding its services to provide more sustainable travel options. The extended 17 service will maintain the same frequency as the 17A bus service, operating every 30 minutes. This will provide improved connections for passengers across central and east Birmingham, similar to the 17A bus service.
In addition to serving Tile Cross, the extended 17 service will run between Birmingham and Chelmsley Wood. This expansion aims to improve accessibility for passengers in the east of the city.
Birmingham Airport is working with public transport operators to reduce its own Scope 3 carbon emissions from passenger travel. The new 17A bus service is part of Birmingham Airport's Airport Surface Access Strategy and wider Sustainability Strategy.
National Express West Midlands is looking forward to exploring additional routes in the near future, in line with Birmingham Airport's strategies. The company is committed to improving public transport in the region and is excited about the potential for further collaboration.
The new 17A bus service is a welcome addition to the sustainable travel options in Birmingham. By choosing public transport, passengers can help reduce traffic, drive down harmful emissions, and contribute to a greener city.
