New Year's Eve Swim organized by Fire Department Mainz: Equal Amount of Enjoyment on a Shorter Route
The City of Mainz celebrated the start of 2024 with the 51st annual New Year's Day swim organised by the Mainz Fire Department. Despite a change in route due to the unavailability of the fireboat, the event was a resounding success, following the high-water cancellation in 2023.
The event took place in the heart of Mainz, with around 200 swimmers participating. These included members from various fire departments, police, military, rescue organisations, private diving clubs, and Mainz's politics and administration. Participants donned creative costumes or used floating accessories, adding a festive touch to the occasion.
The water temperature of the Rhine during the event was a brisk 13°C, but this didn't deter the enthusiastic swimmers. Oberbürgermeister Nino Haase gave the starting signal at 10 am, and the swimmers plunged into the river. Several rescue boats were present to secure experienced and well-equipped swimmers.
Notable figures from politics and society were present on the riverbank to cheer on the participants. Around 400 spectators watched the event from the riverbank, creating a lively atmosphere. The event concluded in a cozy atmosphere in the Rheingoldhalle after Oberbürgermeister Nino Haase and Mr. Stefan Behrendt's arrival.
The Mainz Fire Department chose to donate the proceeds from the event to "Frühstart e.V." Mainz, a non-profit organisation that supports premature babies, sick newborns, and at-risk children. The organisation aims to improve care for these children in the neonatological intensive care unit and associated aftercare facilities at the University Medical Center Mainz.
The New Year's Day swim is more than just a swim; it's an opportunity for the fire department to showcase its water rescue capabilities and network with other water rescue organisations. For further inquiries, contact the City of Mainz Fire Department at 06131 - 12 4650 or [email protected].
The Mainz Fire Department wishes all citizens a safe slide into the new year and all the best for 2025.
