The 58th annual West Indian American Day Carnival and Parade is set to return to Brooklyn for the 2025 celebration, promising a vibrant display of culture, music, and tradition.

The festivities will commence on Sunday and continue through Monday, with the parade starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 1. The parade route, approximately two miles long, will stretch from Utica Avenue near Lincoln Terrace Park to the Brooklyn Museum and Prospect Park.

In preparation for the event, several streets will be closed, including Grand Army Plaza, Butler Place, St. Johns Place, Flatbush Avenue, Washington Avenue, Bedford Avenue, Rochester Avenue, Buffalo Avenue, Ralph Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, Eastern Parkway (Main & Service Roads), Lincoln Place, Rockaway Parkway, East New York Avenue, Empire Boulevard, Parkside Avenue.

To ensure the safety of all attendees, the NYPD has announced a larger police presence for this year's parade than ever before. The parade has more than a dozen security checkpoints, and last year's event was marred by gun violence. However, efforts are being made to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable experience for all.

The parade will be preceded by the early morning celebration of J'Ouvert, which begins before dawn, around 6 a.m., signalling the beginning of the West Indian American Day Carnival. J'Ouvert celebrates the vast Caribbean diaspora with elaborate costumes, street band music, dancing, and more.

Apart from the parade, a Soca music festival, Junior Carnival Parade, and the annual Panorama steelpan festival are events happening all weekend long. Local restaurants in Brooklyn are also preparing for big crowds, offering Caribbean dishes.

It's important to note that the West Indies are made up of three parts: the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and a grouping of islands that includes the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Trinidad and Tobago, and Aruba.

Soca star Kes performed at a music festival at the Brooklyn Museum on Friday night, kicking off the weekend of festivities. The West Indian American Day Carnival and Parade is a significant event in Brooklyn's cultural calendar, drawing millions of spectators each year.
