New York Jets rookie faced unconventional $1 million demand for jersey number 17 from veteran Davante Adams
In the world of American football, the number on a player's jersey often holds significant meaning. For Davante Adams and Malachi Corley, the number 17 became the centre of an unusual story during the 2024 season.
At the start of the season, Malachi Corley, then a member of the New York Jets, was wearing jersey number 17. However, Adams, who was acquired by the Jets from the Raiders in mid-October, found himself in need of the same number.
In a conversation that unfolded on the "Why is Draymond Green Talking About Football? With Jordan Schultz" podcast, Adams approached Corley about the number. Initially, Corley jokingly asked for $1 million for the number, a figure that left Adams initially taken aback.
However, the jest soon became a negotiation, with Corley eventually settling for "17 racks" or $17,000, a sum Adams was willing to pay. The transaction marked the end of Corley's tenure with the number 17, as he later moved to number 14, a suggestion made by Adams himself.
Adams, who made 67 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns during his 11-game stint with the Jets last season, eventually secured jersey number 17. The change seemed to improve his relationship with Corley, as Adams revealed he received a bit more respect from his former teammate after the exchange.
Interestingly, Adams did not have to pay out any money to Corley for the number, as the Jets' policy does not allow players to sell their jersey numbers. Instead, the transaction was more of a friendly agreement between the two players.
Now, both Adams and Corley have moved on. Adams is currently a player for the Rams, while Corley spent time on the Cleveland Browns' practice squad during the 2024 season after being cut by the Jets. Despite the initial misunderstanding, both players can now laugh about the incident, with Adams stating he can laugh about it now.
In the end, the jersey number 17 saga serves as a reminder that even in the competitive world of American football, a sense of camaraderie and humour can exist among players.
