Next Week's Spectacle: Over 7 Billion Individuals Set to Witness the Historic Total Lunar Eclipse
Every six months or so, a celestial event known as a total lunar eclipse, or the "Blood Moon," takes place. This extraordinary phenomenon occurs when the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon align, with the Moon passing completely within the Earth's shadow.
During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon takes on a reddish hue, a sight that has earned it the nickname "Blood Moon." This reddish colour is a result of sunlight filtering through the Earth's atmosphere, with the blue colours being lost, much like the sky at sunset or sunrise.
The Blood Moon eclipse of September 7-8, 2025, is a spectacle not to be missed. Up to 60 percent of the world's population will be able to witness the full eclipse, with the rest of Africa, Australia, much of Europe, and the east coast of Brazil, as well as most of Asia, catching at least part of the totality and the partiality. Unfortunately, most of the Americas will not be able to see the Blood Moon from start to finish.
If one considers at least partial views, the number of people who can see the Blood Moon increases to 87 percent. The eclipse will be best visible in parts of Asia, Australia, and Africa, while in Europe only the second half will be visible. Cities in the western Americas will miss the full event as the Moon either sets or has not yet risen during totality.
The Blood Moon eclipse of 2025 is also record-breaking, with an estimated 7 billion people able to see it. The longest eclipse of this century will occur on August 2, 2027, and will last around 6 minutes and 23 seconds.
Interestingly, in 1973, scientists used a Concorde plane to travel across the path of totality for 74 minutes during an eclipse observation. The first lunar eclipse of 2025 took place in March.
