NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league's interim executive director, David White, have weighed in on the potential expansion of the NFL schedule to 18 games.

At a pre-Super Bowl press conference, Goodell stated that going to 18 games and two is not an unreasonable thing. He also expressed a preference for replacing a preseason game with a regular-season game.

On the other hand, White provided an update on discussions about adding an extra game, stating that the league has the right to bring the issue to the table, but it is not inevitable. He also emphasised the importance of consulting the players before making any decisions.

One player who has pushed back against the idea of an 18-game schedule is Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly, who is on the NFL Players Association executive committee. Kelly stated that he would like to be consulted before making decisions about increasing the number of games.

So far, the NFL schedule has gone from four preseason games and 16 regular-season games to three preseason contests and 17 games during the regular season. It was discussed in 2024 that talks of a new 18-game NFL schedule could be on the table.

As of now, there is no clear timeframe on the discussions ramping up regarding an adjustment to the NFL schedule. It remains to be seen whether the league will move forward with the idea of an 18-game schedule, and if so, how the players will respond.

Overall, the potential expansion of the NFL schedule to 18 games is a topic of ongoing discussion, with both the league and the players expressing their opinions on the matter. It will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming months and years.
