Carolina Panthers Re-Sign Wide Receiver Hunter Renfrow

The Carolina Panthers have added some experienced firepower to their wide receiver room, re-signing Hunter Renfrow, a former Las Vegas Raiders player. Renfrow, who grew up a fan of the Panthers, took the 2024 season off with the goal of playing for his childhood team.

Renfrow, who played the first five years of his career with the Raiders, had a breakout season in 2021, catching 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. However, his performance in 2022 and 2023 was impacted by his autoimmune disease, ulcerative colitis.

Renfrow's return to the field comes at a crucial time for the Panthers, as he could have a prominent role when they open their season on Sept. 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jalen Coker, who played in 11 games last season, including four starts, and had 32 receptions for 478 yards and two touchdowns, has been placed on injured reserve due to a quad injury. As a result, Renfrow will take Coker's roster spot.

The Panthers' receiver room also includes Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, David Moore, Jimmy Horn Jr., and Brycen Tremayne. McMillan has been chosen as the clear No. 1 wide receiver option for quarterback Bryce Young, but Renfrow's experience and proven ability could provide a valuable complement to the group.

Renfrow's re-signing comes after the Panthers traded veteran wideout Adam Thielen to the Minnesota Vikings. The team's first four games are against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, and New England Patriots.

Despite being hindered by a hamstring issue during training camp with the Panthers this offseason, Renfrow managed to secure a spot on the 53-man roster. He had a total of four receptions for 12 yards in the two preseason games he played for the Panthers, against the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Renfrow's return to the field is a testament to his determination and resilience. After being close to retiring due to his struggles with ulcerative colitis, Renfrow was encouraged by his college coach, Dabo Swinney from Clemson, to continue his pro career. The Panthers are lucky to have him on their team.
