Nigeria Announces Increase in Passport Fees for Domestic Applications

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an increase in the cost of acquiring a Nigerian international passport, effective from September 1, 2025. The announcement was made via a statement released on Thursday by the NIS's Public Relations Officer, AS Akinlabi.

The price for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity will be N100,000, an increase from the current N50,000. Similarly, a 64-page passport with 10-year validity will now cost N200,000, an increase from the current N100,000 fee.

However, it's important to note that these increases only apply to applications made in Nigeria. The price for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity for Nigerians in diaspora remains unchanged at $150, as does the price for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity at $230.

The NIS stated that the fee increase is necessary to improve the quality of the Nigerian passport. This comes after significant improvements in the Nigerian passport system under the leadership of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In May 2024, the government announced that home delivery of passports would begin in June. By October 2023, the NIS had cleared a backlog of over 200,000 pending passport applications, a testament to the improvements made in the system.

In the Henley Passport Index 2025, Nigeria's passport ranked 88th out of 199 countries, its highest global position in 11 years. Despite this, there is no information available about the size of a passport being purchasable for 100,000 Naira in Germany as of September 1, 2025.

The price hike announced in August 2024 increased the cost of a 32-page passport from N35,000 to N50,000, and the cost of a 64-page passport from N70,000 to N100,000.

The NIS encourages all Nigerians to apply for their passports early to avoid any inconvenience caused by the fee increase. For more information, applicants are advised to visit the NIS website or contact their local immigration office.
