Nissan Consolidates Data, Systems, and Operations Across Regions in Digital Overhaul

Nissan has embarked on a significant transformation of its supply chain operations in the Americas, integrating compliance data collection into existing systems and digitalizing various processes.

The Japanese automotive giant has created a new compliance function in response to the rising regulatory complexity in topics such as sustainability, rare earth minerals, and data. Adam Shumake, senior manager of SCM compliance at Nissan Group of Americas, leads this new function.

In a strategic move, Nissan has replaced fragmented spreadsheets with a more integrated system, aiming to increase operational consistency while enabling local adaptability. This regionalization strategy is a key part of Nissan's broader operational strategy.

Nissan's data network, which began operation in October last year, is a central component of this transformation. The company has consolidated information in a single source called the Tier-N Sourcing Digital Platform. As a result, over 93% of more than 1,800 suppliers in Nissan's North American operation have provided their tier-N data under non-disclosure agreements.

The Tier-N Sourcing Digital Platform allows for faster evaluation of the market and decision-making through data availability. Nissan has integrated its WMS, TMS, and YMS platforms across the US, Mexico, and South America, further enhancing its data network.

Nissan's compliance team follows the FAIR acronym (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) to make data more useful. This approach ensures that data is not only collected but also easily accessible and usable across different systems and teams.

Moreover, Nissan is combining data and digitalization with its people to improve understanding and visibility across teams. For instance, Grecia Luna, the manager of SCM innovation data and analytics at Nissan Group of Americas, plays a crucial role in this regard.

On the cybersecurity front, Nissan has implemented a three-tier approach through assessment, monitoring, and response to supplier breaches. Eric Elliot, SCM senior manager, supplier cybersecurity, manages a cybersecurity programme tailored to supply chain risk in the Americas. Nissan helps suppliers remediate their cybersecurity issues and creates a formalised report for continuous improvement.

Nissan positions compliance as a competitive advantage, highlighting the cost of non-compliance as a key ROI driver. By streamlining its compliance processes and digitalizing its supply chain, Nissan aims to stay ahead in the competitive automotive industry. The data and analytics strategic pillar is a key focus for Nissan's supply chain transformation.
