Nordstrom's tech leader to resign in the coming days
In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nordstrom announced the departure of Edmond Mesrobian, who served as the company's Chief Technology and Information Officer. Mesrobian's last day at Nordstrom will be on October 14, 2021.
Despite the closure of Nordstrom's Trunk Club apparel subscription service, Mesrobian's leadership has not diminished the improvements made during his tenure. Under his guidance, Nordstrom has been focusing on its digital operations to recover from the challenges of the pandemic and adjust to changing consumer habits.
One of Mesrobian's significant contributions was the restructuring of Nordstrom's tech team in 2019, aimed at leveraging AI to improve the customer experience. The AI models at Nordstrom, trained by human stylists, support the work of these stylists, whether they are assisting customers in-store or digitally. The AI models provide personalized recommendations, making the shopping experience more seamless and enjoyable for customers.
Nordstrom now considers data as essential in fashion retail, viewing it as a prerequisite for understanding customers. This data-driven approach has been a crucial part of Nordstrom's "Closer to You" strategy, which emphasizes using technology to bring the company closer to its customers.
In a memo to employees, CEO Erik Nordstrom expressed gratitude for Mesrobian's leadership and contributions to Nordstrom's business, employees, and customers. He stated that Mesrobian is leaving the company with a solid foundation. Nordstrom is currently searching for a replacement for Mesrobian.
Mesrobian joined Nordstrom in 2018 from Tesco. During his time at Nordstrom, he led significant improvements in the company's technology, data, and product capabilities. He also participated in the Fairchild Live Tech Forum, showcasing his expertise in the field.
Mark Schindele has been appointed as Mesrobian's successor. Schindele's background includes leadership roles at companies such as Target and Best Buy. Nordstrom employees and customers look forward to seeing how Schindele will build upon the foundation laid by Mesrobian.
In a press release, Nordstrom emphasized that data is now a necessity in fashion retail. The company is committed to using data and AI to provide a personalized and seamless shopping experience for its customers. As Nordstrom moves forward, it will continue to leverage technology to bring it closer to its customers.
