North Korea and Russia ink pact to strengthen collaboration in matters of public security
Russia and North Korea have taken a significant step forward in their relationship, with the two countries announcing an agreement to strengthen cooperation on public safety and law enforcement. The announcement was made by the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang on Saturday, following talks between North Korean Public Security Minister Pang Tu-sop and Russia's Minister of Internal Affairs, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, in Moscow.
The agreement comes as both countries are committed to fighting transnational organized crime, with the fight against search and arrests of wanted criminals, responses to extremists and terrorist threats, and a crackdown on trafficking of illegal drugs and humans specifically mentioned as aspects of the fight. The Russian Minister of Internal Affairs cited this as a key area for cooperation with North Korea.
The talks in Moscow on Tuesday also saw the two ministers agreeing on the need to beef up cooperation related to border areas. With an expansion in transportation between the two nations expected to increase cross-border movements of people, there is a growing need to address potential rises in crime such as smuggling.
In addition to the agreement on public safety and law enforcement, North Korean Cultural Minister Sung Jong-gyu departed for Russia on Friday to attend a global cultural forum in Saint Petersburg. The bridge construction between the two nations, which began in April, is also progressing, with plans for the road bridge across the Tumen River to be completed next year.
Russia and North Korea have been expanding cooperation in various areas, including the military, economy, and cultural affairs, since they established a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in June last year. The bridge construction and the agreement on public safety and law enforcement are the latest examples of this growing cooperation between the two countries.
However, the details of the agreement on public safety and law enforcement have not been disclosed. It is known that the agreement includes provisions for information exchange, joint investigations, and coordinated enforcement actions to enhance bilateral security collaboration. The exact nature and scope of the cooperation between the two ministries have not been specified.
The construction of the bridge and the agreement on public safety and law enforcement are significant developments in the relationship between Russia and North Korea. The two countries are working together to address pressing issues such as transnational organized crime and the need for increased security cooperation. As the relationship between the two countries continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how they continue to collaborate and work together in the future.
