North Korea labels South Korea's proposed modifications to joint military exercises between South Korea and the U.S. as 'deceitful'
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) launched the large-scale joint military exercise Ulchi Freedom Shield between South Korea and the United States on Monday, with the other half of the approximately 40 field exercises scheduled to take place in early September.
Despite the ongoing exercise, North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) has issued criticism, accusing South Korea and the US of using the adjustment of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise as a "deceptive tactic."
The KCNA does not confirm any changes to the basic drills outlined in the actual US-Republic of Korea exercise plan. However, it does mention that only the messy drills of the South Korean military have been postponed. The KCNA maintains that the true nature of the joint exercise as the world's longest-running and largest-scale drills in the Asia-Pacific will not be hidden.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which began on Monday and is scheduled to run for 11 days, was originally planned to include both halves of the field exercises. The postponement of half of these drills appears to be Seoul's bid to improve relations with North Korea.
The KCNA warns that North Korea's firm will and capability to safeguard its sovereignty and security will be demonstrated through action. North Korea's response to the measures taken by its enemies will be "active and overwhelming," according to the KCNA.
Interestingly, the KCNA does not provide any new information about the duration or schedule of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, nor does it mention any new criticism of the joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States. It also does not comment on Seoul's bid to improve relations with North Korea through the postponement of half of the field drills for the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise.
The KCNA does not provide any new details about the current state of relations between North Korea and South Korea or the United States. Despite this, it is clear that the ongoing joint military exercise between the two nations is a point of contention for North Korea, which continues to assert its commitment to protecting its sovereignty and security.
