Norwalk High Girls Volleyball Team Breaks Six-Match Losing Streak Against Gahr High

In a thrilling match that went down to the wire, the Norwalk High girls volleyball team emerged victorious against Gahr High on October 1, 2024. The win not only ended a six-match losing streak for Gahr but also marked a significant improvement for Norwalk, who have one more win in just under two full seasons than they did in the 2018 and 2019 seasons combined.

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams showing impressive skill and determination. Samantha Munoz, a senior middle blocker for Norwalk, had a crucial tip at the net that won the match for her team. Mirei Sanchez, a sophomore outside hitter for Norwalk, had her best stretch of the match in the fourth set, reducing Norwalk's deficit from eight points to four. Diana Avina, a senior opposite hitter for Norwalk, also contributed with a kill and three aces in the fourth set, helping Norwalk come back from a deficit and tie the set at 19-19.

Norwalk started strongly, with nine aces in the first set and a good grip on the serving side. However, Gahr fought back in the third set, winning 25-19. The fourth set was a nail-biter, with the score tied at 25-25 before Norwalk secured the victory. The final score was 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 27-25 in favour of Norwalk.

Assistant coach Alex Quan-Madrid expressed concern that the down referee should have made a net call in the final point, leading to some controversy. Despite this, Quan-Madrid believes this team is more skilled than last season's team. Coach Enrique Galicia and the girls at Gahr put up a strong fight, but it was not enough to secure the win.

The victory puts Norwalk in third place in the Gateway League, with a record of 2-2, while Gahr drops to 0-4. Gahr will look to bounce back when they host Downey on Tuesday and travel to Warren on Thursday. The girls on the Norwalk team are still hungry and understand a lot can change with the next four games.

This is the best two-year, or close to two-year stretch by Gahr in over 25 seasons. In 2023, Gahr went 22-12 and tied for third place in the league. Gahr served 24 aces in the match, with nine coming from sophomore libero Jayden Sydenham and eight more from junior outside hitter Genesis Islas.

The Norwalk High girls volleyball team began the second round of league against La Mirada on Oct. 3, aiming to build on their recent victory. It was a tough match for Norwalk, who lost 3-0, but the team remains optimistic and determined to continue improving.
