Notre Dame Girls Lacrosse Suffers Defeat in Debut State Tournament Semifinals
In the world of high school sports in Northern Kentucky, several teams and individuals have made significant strides this season.
Annika Derks and Natalie Lukey of Simon Kenton qualified for the 8th Region girls doubles tournament, joining their counterparts in other regions. Ryle's Avery Love and Niveditha Salvaraju will face Dixie Heights' Cassidy Derry and Isabella Norvell in the 9th Region girls doubles final.
In the realm of lacrosse, Notre Dame, one of four Northern Kentucky high schools with a girls team this spring, competed valiantly. Despite losing to Lexington Sayre in the state semifinals with a score of 10-8, Notre Dame's loss was their first to an in-state opponent this season. The team, under the guidance of head coach Jimmy Marshall, was led by Hannah Powers, the state's leading scorer going into the semifinal match, with 93 goals in 18 games for a 5.1 average. In the state semifinal game, Powers, Andrea Carothers, Georgi Kirtley, Hannah Dusing, and Caitlin Ross scored goals for Notre Dame. Powers and Kirtley were both recruited by NCAA Division II college teams.
Meanwhile, in the 9th Region baseball tournament, defending champion Ryle, Conner, Dixie Heights, St. Henry, Beechwood, Covington Catholic, Highlands, and Newport Central Catholic will battle it out at Thomas More Stadium in Florence. Chris Wells and Cameron Wells of Campbell County qualified for the 10th Region boys doubles tournament, and Rylee Ritter of Campbell County qualified for the 10th Region girls singles tournament.
Finally, in the 9th Region girls doubles tournament, Beechwood senior Sadie Jones and Cooper junior Kayla Johnson will play in the final. Sayre (17-4) will play Kentucky Country Day (18-3) in the state championship game at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Collins High School.
