"Nun's Demise serves as fresh query for Natalia Wörner"

In the upcoming episode of the ARD series "The Diplomat," titled "Death of a Nun," set to air on August 23 at 8:15 PM, viewers will witness the eighth appearance of Natalia Wörner as the tenacious Karla Lorenz.

The series, which takes place in Rome, a city where Catholicism is deeply rooted, presents a darker undertone, suggesting a veil of silence that hangs over the Eternal City. This time, the story revolves around the death of a German nun, officially ruled as a suicide. However, as the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the truth is far more complex.

Karla Lorenz, a diplomat in Rome, faces resistance in the conservative environment due to her rough manner. Yet, she remains undeterred, fighting for justice with a touch of kindness, as Commissioner Ricarda Motte (Clelia Sarto) joins her in this mission.

The Mother Superior of the monastery where the nun died is Susanne Wuest, who, along with her sisters in faith, finds it difficult to seek help outside the confines of their monastery. The video's appearance makes the trail lead deeper than the diplomatic world would like, as it hints at the abuse of nuns by men who are supposed to be God's representatives on earth, an existential crisis that the series depicts.

Natalia Wörner, known for her advocacy for victims of sexualized violence, is "on fire" for the topic of the Catholic Church covering up cases of abuse. She shows emotional frustration in a scene, highlighting the ambivalence her character faces. Wörner, like her character, fights for justice, emphasizing the importance of women being allowed to be loud, heard, and expressive.

The cardinal associated with the episode is Cardinal Köhlbauer. Wörner does not want to outright condemn the Church, acknowledging the need for faith and security it provides, especially in difficult times. Yet, she also questions the silence that surrounds the abuse of nuns, a silence that the series seeks to break.

Rome, in the series, serves as more than just a backdrop. It becomes a character in its own right, reflecting the complexities and contradictions of the city and the Church. The new episode promises to be a gripping exploration of power, faith, and the search for truth in the heart of the Vatican.
