NYC Mayor's Competition: Whispers persist regarding Eric Adams potentially leaving the election, allegedly due to Trump offering him a position
In the bustling political landscape of New York City, speculation has been mounting about the future of mayoral candidate Eric Adams. The latest buzz surrounds the possibility of Adams leaving the race and potentially joining the Trump administration.
According to reports by The New York Post and Politico, discussions between Adams and the White House have been taking place, with Trump allegedly offering Adams a post at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. However, Adams' campaign spokesperson, Todd Shapiro, has categorically denied these claims, stating that Adams has not met with Trump and is staying in the race.
The rumors of Adams' potential exit from the race came into public view with an Aug. 27 column by New York Post gossip writer Cindy Adams. The column suggested that the mayor may be willing to end his run if offered a cushy job that allows him to continue enjoying some of the benefits he has enjoyed as mayor, such as money, TV appearances, and good tables at restaurants.
Despite these rumors, Adams' campaign chair, Frank Carone, simply replied "no" when asked via text whether the mayor was about to drop out of the race. Adams' most prominent supporter in the general election, former Gov. David Paterson, has also not heard anything that would appear to be accurate regarding Adams exiting the race.
Paterson speculates that the rumors have started to bubble up partially because there has been "a lull" in the mayor's campaigning over the past couple of days. However, Adams' continued presence in the race and his recent trip to Florida, where he met with unnamed "political figures," have done little to quell the speculation.
It is important to note that there are no specific detailed public records or confirmed reports about any consultations between the Trump administration and Adams regarding a potential appointment.
Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee for the New York City mayor's race is Zohran Mamdani. As the race heats up, Adams continues to maintain his campaign, despite the persistent rumors of his potential exit.
In a recent development, advisers to Donald Trump are also reportedly discussing doing the same for GOP mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa. This move, if it were to materialize, could potentially clear the field for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has been sidelined from the race due to sexual harassment allegations.
As the New York City mayoral race enters its final stretch, the future of Eric Adams remains uncertain. Only time will tell if the rumors of his potential exit from the race will prove to be true or just another twist in the city's political drama.
