NYSC Resumes Payments of Backpay for Allowances Following a Two-Month Hiatus
The Tinubu-led Federal government has taken a significant step to ease the burden of rising costs of living on Nigerian youths by introducing an increase in allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. This decision follows weeks of frustration among corps members over the delay in implementing the allowance increase.
The payments, which cover arrears that were suspended for two months, are ongoing and span from July 2023 to March 2024. The first batch of payments was made on June 3, 2023. The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, confirmed that both serving corps members and those who have already completed their service year will receive their arrears. He also mentioned that the NYSC has the bank details of recent graduates.
The payments apply to the revised ₦77,000 monthly allowance and are part of the allowances introduced by the Federal Government. However, no specific date has been given for the completion of all payments. The NYSC has not yet specified a date for the completion of all payments, but the organization has resumed payment of arrears and expects the payments to bring relief to the beneficiaries who had been waiting for their new approved allowance.
It is important to note that the incident in Anambra where a female corps member was assaulted by security operatives is not related to the NYSC's arrears payments.
Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu had earlier stated that all eligible members would receive their arrears once funds were released. He further clarified that the payments of arrears to Corps members for the period from July 2024 to March 2025 are managed by the NYSC organization.
The resumption of payments is a welcome development for the corps members who have been eagerly awaiting their increased allowances. The payments are expected to provide much-needed financial relief during these challenging economic times.
