Extending Driver's License Class B Without a Test: An Overview of the Process - Obtaining a New License without a Test: Guidelines for Replacement

A Class B driver's license in many countries grants you the ability to operate a variety of vehicles, including motorcycles, three-wheeled vehicles, and small four-wheeled vehicles like quads. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect with a Class B license:

Motorcycles and Three-Wheeled Vehicles

Class B permits you to drive light motorcycles with a maximum speed of 45 km/h and certain restrictions. It also allows operation of three-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles with two tires on one axle.

Tractors and Mowers

With a Class B license, you can operate tractors (tractor-trailers up to 40 km/h) and large mowers (up to 25 km/h).

Towing Limitations

When it comes to towing, a Class B license may not provide enough weight for the trailer when towing a vehicle like a van. However, the solution for driving trailers heavier than 750 kg is the B96 extension of the Class B driver's license. With the B96 extension, the total weight of the towing vehicle and trailer may not exceed 4,250 kg. Examples of vehicles that can tow heavier trailers with the B96 extension include Mercedes ML (1,450 kg for the trailer), VW Tiguan with all-wheel drive (2 tons), and Mitsubishi Pajero (at least 1,220 kg for the trailer).

Passenger Vehicles and Capacity

A Class B driver's license allows you to drive vehicles carrying up to eight people, including the driver.

Limitations and Extensions

There is a limitation when it comes to trailers with the combination of vehicle and trailer not exceeding 3,500 kg in weight. If you need to tow trailers heavier than 750 kg, the B96 extension is the way to go. The costs for B96 extension are manageable, ranging from 300 to 500 euros according to ADAC.

Moving Forward: B96 and BE

The B96 extension does not require a test, only a driving school course with a theoretical and practical part that can be completed in one day. After B96, the next step is the BE class, which requires a practical exam, driving lessons, and higher costs (around 1000 euros).

Trailer Weight Limitations in Private Use

In private use, one will exceed the limit with caravans, horse, or boat trailers with a Class B license. For heavier trailers, you would need to obtain an BE license, which allows you to drive trailers up to 3.5 tonnes, and the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle may not exceed seven tonnes.

Cross-Country Usage

B96 is valid throughout Europe, making it a convenient option for those who travel frequently or need to tow heavier trailers across borders.

Before starting the BE training, it's recommended to practice driving with a trailer extensively within the limits of class B. This will ensure a smooth transition when you decide to pursue the BE class.
