Officer Killed in BQE Hit-and-Run Incident Leads to Driver's Arrest by NYPD
An off-duty NYPD officer has tragically lost his life following an accident on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) near exit 27, which connects to Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill. The incident occurred around 8:27 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to reports, the off-duty officer was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by a box truck. The victim was later pronounced dead at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn.
The city's police union confirmed the sad news of the officer's death, but no additional details about the victim were provided. The name of the off-duty officer has not been disclosed by authorities.
Carlos Almanzar Toribio, a 30-year-old man from Washington Heights, has been arrested for allegedly fleeing the scene after the fatal accident. Toribio was also charged with driving an unregistered vehicle and driving without a license plate, in addition to leaving the scene of an accident, an E-class felony, which is punishable by up to four years in prison.
