The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has taken a significant step forward in its mission to transform Nigeria's energy sector. In July 2025, the refinery received 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks, marking the beginning of an ambitious nationwide distribution initiative.
This initiative is part of the company's N720 billion investment programme and is expected to absorb over N1.07 trillion annually in distribution costs. The aim is to provide a more efficient and cost-effective distribution network, with the potential to save Nigerians more than N1.7 trillion each year in energy expenses.
The direct distribution of fuels in Nigeria will be handled by a consortium of companies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Oando, Conoil, and MRS. The distribution is scheduled to commence on August 1, 2023, with the initial plan for the initiative to be launched on August 15.
The Dangote Refinery's goal is to meet Nigeria's daily demand of 65 million liters of refined petroleum products, including 45 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 15 million liters of diesel, and 5 million liters of aviation fuel. The initiative also aims to benefit over 42 million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and create over 15,000 jobs across the logistics value chain.
However, the direct distribution initiative has raised concerns among some stakeholders. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has expressed fears about potential job losses and jeopardised investments for its members. Despite these concerns, the Dangote Refinery remains committed to its mission of revolutionising Nigeria's energy sector and providing a more sustainable and efficient fuel distribution network.
As the launch date of the initiative approaches, expectations are high, and the potential benefits for Nigeria's economy and its citizens are significant. The Dangote Refinery's nationwide fuel distribution initiative is poised to revive dormant filling stations, create jobs, and provide a more affordable and accessible energy solution for millions of Nigerians.
