Old-time blacksmiths to power a fresh water wheel in Trippstadt, a town within Kaiserslautern's district
In the picturesque Karlstal valley near Trippstadt, a touch of the Middle Ages has been brought back to life. Vincent Verschoor, a Dutch native now residing in the West Palatinate, has embarked on a remarkable project to recreate an old forge reminiscent of the Middle Ages.
The centrepiece of this revival is a hammer mill, complete with a water wheel that serves its operation. The water wheel, with a diameter exceeding five meters, was built independently by Verschoor over a period of two years. The mill is designed to rotate and drive three hammers for blacksmithing, much like its medieval counterparts.
The mill and its accompanying hall, which Verschoor has also rebuilt, are located on the property he owns at the Lower Hammer. The hall, once home to the hammer mill, has been restored and will now serve as a venue for events and concerts. In the future, it will also display a collection of old blacksmithing and craft tools.
The idea for the water wheel and hammer mill came from Verschoor himself, who saw potential in the rich history of the Karlstal valley. Forges indeed existed in this valley during the Middle Ages, making it an ideal location for such a project.
This labour of love for Verschoor does not stop at the mill and the hall. He also plans to offer authentic blacksmithing courses for visitors, allowing them to experience the craft first-hand. This educational aspect further solidifies the mill as a significant contribution to the local culture and history.
The cost of building the water wheel and hammer mill was approximately 40,000 euros, a testament to the dedication and commitment that Verschoor has poured into this project. His passion for the project is evident, as he continues to breathe life into the medieval past, creating a unique attraction in the Karlstal valley.
