Opened main cycleway in Hanau: 'A crucial step towards sustainable infrastructure and tourism enhancement'
The Main Cycle Route, a significant cycling infrastructure in the region, has been renovated and expanded, connecting the cities of Hanau, Aschaffenburg, Offenbach, Frankfurt, and Mainz.
The renovation project, which began in October 2024, was completed ahead of schedule, and the D-Route-5 section of the Main Cycle Route was officially opened by Hanau City Councilor Isabelle Hemsley on Monday, 8th September, at 16:30.
The total investment volume for the renovation was 2.9 million euros, with the city of Hanau contributing around 700,000 euros. Additional funding was provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport.
The route was widened to 3.50 meters and equipped with an additional shoulder strip for drainage, ensuring a smoother and safer journey for cyclists.
The Main Cycle Route is part of the D-Route 5 Saar-Mosel-Main and is one of the most frequently used cycle routes in the region. On weekends, up to 3,300 cyclists and pedestrians use the Main Cycle Route, while during the week, it serves as an important connection for many commuters from Hanau and the surrounding area.
The Main Cycle Route is not only significant for the region but also for the country and Europe. It is a national importance cycle route and part of the Germany Cycle Network, which forms a network of national importance cycle routes and is part of the European cycle route network "EuroVelo".
The renovated cycling infrastructure has already been put to use, despite bad weather conditions. Despite the challenging weather, the Main Cycle Route remains a popular choice for cyclists and pedestrians in the region.
