Operation Finalized in Hannover-Misburg: Successful Management of Military Personnel Removal
In the heart of Hannover, a significant event unfolded on Monday as a World War II bomb was successfully defused by the city's emergency services.
The bomb, a 500-pound British device equipped with an impact fuse, was discovered during exploratory work on a property on Anderter Straße. It was found submerged in a water-filled retention basin about 2 meters deep.
Upon identification, a safety zone with a radius of 1,000 meters was established, and approximately 340 emergency service personnel, including fire department, police, aid organizations, and the explosive ordnance disposal service, were deployed to handle the situation.
Dr. Axel von der Ohe, the fire department head, expressed great satisfaction with the completion of the measures. He thanked the emergency services and the citizens of the Misburg-South district for their cooperation.
The evacuation area, which affected around 3,350 people, was asked to leave at 16:30. Around 150 evacuees sought shelter at the care center set up at the Pestalozzi School in Eisteichweg.
The EOD diver defused the explosive device at 19:43 after preparatory work was finished. At 18:57, the clearance forces reported safety in the evacuation area, allowing EOD experts to begin their work.
After the explosive site was checked, the safety zone was lifted at 20:25, and all affected residents were able to return to their homes. The citizen's hotline received 101 calls by 20:25.
The organization that supported the explosive ordnance disposal experts in successfully dealing with the bomb was not explicitly identified in the available search results. However, the information was provided by Fire Department Hannover and transmitted via news aktuell.
Gregor Fleischmann, deputy head of the fire department, emphasized the challenges presented by the bomb's location in water. Despite these challenges, the operation was carried out efficiently and safely, ensuring the safety of the city's residents.
