Operation's Conclusion in Herne: Achievement Acknowledged
On September 6, 2025, St. Elisabeth Group Campus in Herne-Börnig played host to a simulated emergency scenario. The exercise, which served as the grand finale of the "Summer Academy of Emergency Medicine 2025" for medical students, aimed to emphasise the importance of quick action and close collaboration among emergency responders.
Medical students from different clinical semesters were prepared for the drill by experienced emergency physicians from Marien Hospital Herne - University Hospital of Ruhr University Bochum. Actors portraying the perpetrator and victims were in makeup by 6:30 AM, with realistic-looking wounds and character cards outlining their behaviour during the exercise.
The emergency services involved included firefighters, paramedics, police, and medical students from Ruhr University Bochum. Police officers were the first to enter the campus building to secure the crime scene and arrest the perpetrator. Firefighters and paramedics then carried the injured to the courtyard, where they were assessed and treated according to priority.
Close communication among emergency responders was crucial during the exercise. René Bonn, spokesperson for the Berufsfeuerwehr Herne, stated that the collaboration worked well during the exercise. Following the exercise, everyone, whether experienced emergency responders or students, can learn from the experience.
