Origins of the green phrase: its derivation explained

==================================================================

In the year 1924, German automaker Opel made a bold move by introducing the Opel Laubfrosch, a budget-friendly two-seater that was an exact copy of the Citroën 5CV. This French car, affectionately known as the "Zitrone" due to its yellow colour, found itself facing a legal battle in Berlin.

The French initiated a lawsuit to ban the Opel Laubfrosch, arguing that it was a blatant copy of their beloved 5CV. However, Opel managed to win the case, a victory that was attributed to a seemingly insignificant detail - the Opel Laubfrosch was green, while the Citroën 5CV was yellow. This minor difference, it was argued, would minimise the possibility of confusion.

The court in Berlin, where the lawsuit was held, is not explicitly stated to be "not-so-French-friendly." Regardless, the outcome of the legal dispute marked a significant moment in the automotive industry, demonstrating the importance of distinguishing products from competitors to avoid legal complications.

Interestingly, the phrase "Das Gleiche in Grün" gained nationwide popularity around the same time. This German phrase, which means "the same thing but in green," is often used colloquially to mean "the same thing but with a slight variation." However, the specific origin of the phrase is not clearly documented, and it is not mentioned to have been used in the context of the legal dispute between Opel and Citroën.

Today, the phrase "Das Gleiche in Grün" is still used, and the Opel Laubfrosch and Citroën 5CV remain as examples of products that are essentially the same but differ only in nuances. The nickname "Zitrone" is still used as an informal term for the Citroën brand today, reminding us of the colourful history that these two cars share.
