Over 170 forest fires currently erupting in Yakutia as of June 25th.
In the remote Srednekolymsky district, firefighters and aviation specialists are working tirelessly to protect the village of Sylygy-Ytar, as wildfires continue to spread across the region. The Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief (MCHS) has deployed its aviation division to the Tepliy Klyuch village, aiding the efforts in the affected areas.
The districts of Tomponsky, Aldansky, Ust-Maysky, Abyysky, Ust-Yansky, Verkhnekolymsky, Momsky, Verkhoyansky, and Srednekolymsky have been hit hardest by the wildfires. The recent passage of dry thunderstorms has led to the emergence of new fires in these regions.
Despite the challenging conditions, there have been no reported cases of poisoning by combustion products or carbon monoxide. Two active fires are currently burning in the Olekminsky district, one each in the Tatatin and Tomponsky districts.
The local branch of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) is leading the firefighting efforts in the Republic of Yakutia. Specialized fire units, including forest fire brigades, have been deployed to combat the wildfires. However, specific numbers of personnel and units in Yakutia are not currently available.
As of the latest reports, Yakutia is grappling with 170 wildfires. On June 25, 2024, 15 atmospheric air samples were taken and analyzed in several districts, with no Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) excess found.
Smoke has been observed in 5 settlements in the Abyisky and Middle Kolymsk districts, according to space monitoring by the National Crisis Management Centre (NCC). In these districts, a total of 122 fires have been registered, covering an area of 573,492 hectares since detection.
To intensify the firefighting efforts, a group of forces and means has been reinforced by 124 people and 4 units of equipment. The multi-purpose ORLAN-10 UAV is being used in the Tatatin district, while the Phantom-4 UAV is being used in the Middle Kolymsk district for wildfire detection.
On a daily basis, 19 wildfires are being extinguished, covering an area of 8,834 hectares. A total of 1,442 people and 94 units of equipment are involved in the fight against the wildfires.
The Russian MCHS is focusing its efforts on protecting populated areas and coordinating wildfire extinguishing forces. Five wildfires are currently under special control of the Main Directorate. The total area covered by these wildfires is over 596 thousand hectares.
The situation remains critical, but with the combined efforts of the firefighters, aviation specialists, and the local community, there is hope that the wildfires in Yakutia can be brought under control.
