Berlin is facing a persistent shortage of teaching staff as the new school year approaches, with the demand for educators yet to be met.

According to the latest reports, a total of 952 applications were received from fully qualified candidates for teaching positions in Berlin as of August 1st. Of these, 606 were from Berlin residents. However, so far, only 184 teaching positions have been filled for the upcoming school year.

The majority of the new teachers will be stationed at primary schools, with 97 positions allocated. The remaining positions will be distributed among integrated secondary schools and gymnasiums (81) and vocational schools (6).

Despite ongoing efforts, no specific organizations have been identified as having applied to combat the teacher staffing shortages in Berlin schools for the next school year. The closest related information is that Berlin's Education Senator, Katharina Günther-Wünsch, has engaged in dialogue with the GEW union about workload issues and the need for additional full-time teacher positions.

In an attempt to address the shortage, the education administration anticipates a need for 4,161 additional full-time positions in Berlin's schools for the upcoming school year.

Interestingly, 580 individuals have applied for a career change into teaching for the upcoming school year, potentially offering a solution to the staffing shortage.

The exact number of staff shortages in Berlin's schools can only be determined by early October. As of the end of 2023, there were approximately 35,460 teaching staff in Berlin's schools.

Of the 184 teaching positions filled, 194 applicants have received an offer. It remains to be seen whether the remaining applicants will be offered positions, or if additional measures will need to be taken to ensure that Berlin's schools are adequately staffed for the new school year.
